On Monday, October 23, the "Great Canadian Beer Hall" returns to Dirt Candy (86 Allen Street) and they’re using the evening to celebrate the life of Gord Downie, lead singer of The Tragically Hip, who passed away on October 17 at the age of 53 years old. They’ll be playing the Hip on the playlist all night long, starting with their first album, and a portion of the evening’s proceeds will go to the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, Gord’s charity of choice, dedicated to reconciliation between Canada’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples.

If you’re Canadian, you know who Gord was and right now you’re hurting. Come down on Monday, and raise a glass to his memory.

If you’re not Canadian, you’re probably saying “Gord who?” Founded in 1984, The Tragically Hip are Canada’s house band, with nine number one albums. But that’s just part of it. The New York Times says of Gord Downie, “Imagine Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Michael Stipe combined into one sensitive, oblique poet-philosopher, and you’re getting close.”

In a tearful eulogy, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke for us all when he said, “Gord was everyone’s friend. We are less of a country without Gord Downie in it. It hurts.”

Gord loved Canada, and we all loved Gord. So come down on Monday night and be together, share a drink, watch some hockey, and listen to the Hip.
