CANY Art Collection |
Canada in PaintingsThe Canadian Association of New York Art CollectionThis marvelous collection of paintings is a unique depiction of the Canadian landscape from its mountains to its seas and the vastness in between. Every one of the country’s 10 provinces is represented, with one painting standing in for the three territories. All but one of the works was done by a Canadian artist, although some immigrated from Britain. The single outlier is Augustus John, one of Britain’s leading early 20th century artists. His The Canadians of two First World War infantrymen is a masterpiece of the portrait work for which he would become famous. This collection belongs to the Canadian Association of New York, an organization that combines New York’s former Canadian Club and Canadian Society. All the paintings were either purchased or commissioned in advance of the Canadian Club’s 50th anniversary in 1953. The clear intent was to reflect every province and every region of Canada to metropolitan New York as well as to remind club members of their heritage. Included in the collection is a large portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Frank Slater that was unveiled in New York City by the Queen Mother on October 27, 1954 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel (which at the time was the home of the Canadian Association of New York). The CANY art collection also includes several other paintings of English castles and landscapes. Since the Canadian Association no longer has a physical location in New York, Dunnington, Bartholow & Miller, a corporate member of CANY, agreed to care for and display this distinctive collection in their New York office. |
