Lorne Holland Bouchard

1861 - 1933

Lorne Bouchard, painter, commercial designer and illustrator, had his first exhibit in 1931 at age 18 in Montréal where he was born and lived much of his life. His last exhibit, also in Montréal, was in 1997, a year before he died.

A landscape painter by choice, Bouchard was influenced early on by Maurice Cullen and Clarence Gagnon. Later, he also did landscape illustrations for magazines and worked as an advertising illustrator for agencies and major companies such as Seagram’s.

Canada’s wild and isolated regions, especially northern Quebec and the Arctic, which he visited three times, served as inspiration for his landscape painting. He was a location painter, working quickly to capture the atmospheric effects of light.

Canadian Village in Winter, a classic winter Quebec scene, demonstrates how Bouchard combines realism and impressionism.
