Now in its 12th year, the CANY Central Park Classic Hockey Tournament continues to grow, improve and generate enthusiastic reviews and feedback. The tournament is about having fun, celebrating the sport of hockey, and most importantly, raising money for some great charities. What makes the tourney truly special is that it is played outdoors in one of the most famous parks in the world.

We are proud to say the tournament has become a substantial contributor to our supported charities:Ice Hockey in Harlem and the NY Sled Rangers. It also fosters bonds and makes new connections between Canadians and New Yorkers.

While the tourney has grown steadily over the years, its focus on sportsmanship, camaraderie and charity has remained a constant. We encourage participation of players and teams of all levels, so there can be a range of playing abilities among participants. We have always had a great spirit among tourney participants who understand that the main objectives are to raise money for charity and to enjoy playing hockey.

The tourney was launched in 2006 on President’s Day weekend with a mix of teams from the New York City area and Canada. In 2007, there was another successful tourney held with 12 teams enjoying a sunny weekend in Central Park.

After a hiatus in 2008, the tourney returned in 2009 for the 3rd edition, with 14 participating teams and a clear charitable mission to raise funds for Ice Hockey in Harlem. It was in 2009 when we established the trophy – the Stikeman Cup.

In 2011, Le National came from behind to win.

In 2012, we had another beautiful weekend, and Stikeman Elliott brought the trophy back to the lobby in their NY offices!

In 2013, an alumni team from Upper Canada College prevailed and had their names engraved on the Stikeman Cup.

In 2014, a winter storm caused the cancellation of play on Saturday, but a number of teams arrived at the rink on Sunday for an abbreviated tourney.  Cumming & Partners, a team that travelled down from Canada, played UCC in the final and captured the 2014 Stikeman Cup.

In 2015, Westside Skate & Stick won a fast-paced final and brought glory to the best hockey retailer in NYC.  The Stikeman Cup went on a tour of several local drinking establishments, but has been safely returned.

In 2016, Westside Skate & Stick were able to repeat as Stikeman Cup champions.

Under beautiful blue skies, the UCC Blues captured the 2017 Stikeman Cup with a 7-6 OT victory over the Crazy Canucks.  The final was a seesaw affair, with UCC scoring twice in the third period to take the lead into the final minute of the third.  This set the stage for a desperation goal from the Crazy Canucks with 17 seconds left to force OT.  Unrattled, UCC came out and scored in the OT period to claim the championship.  This marks the second Stikeman Cup championship for UCC, the last one coming in 2013.

Looking forward to another great tourney in 2018!
